DOT Physicals

DOT Physicals

Driving a commercial vehicle means long, hard hours on the road. DOT (Department of Transportation) physicals help keep drivers safe by making sure that you are able to meet the physical demands of the job. Drivers must meet all DOT physical requirements before receiving their CDL medical card.

Our practitioner is certified by FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) to perform DOT physicals. Our staff is trained to understand DOT regulations and prevent drivers from being inappropriately disqualified.

All Drivers

Bring a complete list of ALL of your medications, including doses and your doctors' names and addresses.

Drivers who require eyeglasses or contact lenses must bring your glasses/contacts. All drivers will be required to pass a vision test.

Your blood pressure MUST be below 140/90 on the day of your exam or you may not qualify for a DOT card.

Drivers who have heart-related issues must bring a letter from your cardiologist that outlines your medical history and current medications and indicates you are safe to drive a DOT vehicle. You may also need to bring the results of a recent stress test, ECHO cardiogram, or other testing completed within the last 1-2 years.

 Heart-related issues include:

  • Use of a stent
  • Valve replacement
  • Pacemaker
  • Open-heart surgery
  • Cardiac bypass surgery
  • Heart attack

If you have suffered from a stroke, a brain tumor, seizure disorder, or bleeding in the brain, please bring a letter from your neurologist that outlines your medical history. The letter should also include your current medications and current neurologic and psychiatric state.

If you have experienced the permanent loss or use of an arm or a leg, please bring an overview from your physician of the injury and if you have any work restrictions due to the injury. You may need a Skilled Performance Examination in order to qualify for your DOT card.

If you are taking any controlled substances or medications that may cause sleepiness (includes narcotics, sleeping pills, anxiety medicine, ADHD medication) you will most likely need a note and medical records from your treating physician regarding the safety of operating a DOT vehicle while using these medications.
